I have the opportunity to rent a garden plot on the campus of Anderson University. Since I live in an apartment, I have very limited outdoor space…limited is an understatement – I have maybe 6 square feet of brick for my ‘yard.’ I have an obsession with fresh vegetables and fresh flowers! But they’re just so stinkin’ expensive! My boyfriend and I decided that we should plant a vegetable garden! I already have visions of our plot will look like! We will definitely need some sunflowers (they’re not veggies, but oh so pretty), spinach, squash, zucchini, maybe some corn, tomatoes, sugar snap peas….the list goes on and on. The only problem is that I’m not very patient. I would like all of my veggies now plus a vase filled with beautiful sunflowers. Realistically, it’s going to be months before I see any return on my investment. I’m looking forward to watching the process from beginning to end – preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering and weeding on a regular basis, and finally harvesting off all my investments!
In the Bible there are many parables about gardening. One of my favorite is the parable of a tree and its fruit (Luke 6:43-45).
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briars. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (NIV)
I intend on planting good seeds in my garden and cultivating it to get the best vegetables possible. I don’t want my vegetables not to grow or turn out to be mediocre. It’s the same thing in my life. Like the verse says, “the good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart…for out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” I don’t want to cultivate negativity, stress, anger, or any of those things that can flow out of my mouth and to other people. I want to put the effort forth to cultivate good fruit to feed other people. ----- Hannah |
